Colour Changing Flowers

Our little ones love engaging in science experiments and so we decided to set one up using flowers! As soon as they saw these beautiful white flowers, jars and coloured dye set up on the table, they were intrigued and wanted to know more.

Carefully, each child was invited to pour some water into each jar. This involved a lot of focus and of course a steady hand so as not to spill the water on the table. Then we looked at the different coloured dye we had and each of our tamariki chose a colour to add to the jar. Very carefully, we added a few drops of dye to the water and mixed it together.

Picking up a flower each, we lowered it into the jar and set the jars and flowers up on the table. โ€œWhat do you think is going to happen?โ€, we asked. Our little ones were not sure but were eager to find out. We left the flowers on the table for the rest of the day and every so often one of our little ones would come closer and check if anything had changed.

The following day when they arrived at the centre, they went straight to the flowers and they was so excited and surprised to see that some of the petals had begun to change colour. Wow!

We then discussed how flowers need water to survive and that their stem helps to suck up the water and spread it around the parts of the flower.

These types of experiments are a great way for our little ones to explore science in a fun and exciting way. Watch out to see what our little scientists get up to next! ๐Ÿ˜Š
