Creations with Shapes

There are so many ways that our little ones can let their creativity flourish and express their ideas/thoughts about the wide world around them. Today we set up a provocation with loose parts - in this case, shapes. We invited our little ones to create anything they wanted. Some of them spent time exploring the different shapes and colours, while others got straight into it and began strategically placing their shapes onto their blank canvas. Some shapes were smaller than others, so they had to utilise their fine motor skills to carefully position them without affecting what was already there.

During these interactions, we had discussions about the different pictures they were creating and it was so fulfilling to see the sense of pride & excitement when their creations eventually came together.

Creating with loose parts involves vision, problem-solving, concentration and of course a steady hand. This experience also promotes spatial awareness and exploration of patterns, shapes and sequence - all early maths concepts.

To value each transient creation, we took a photo so that our little ones could proudly revisit and share their creations with others before the next contender sat down to create their own masterpiece.
